JANUARY 2026 MEETING AT HARLEQUIN

Our January Social Group meeting took place on Thursday, 29 January 2026, at the Harlequin in Watford. We gathered in the Gallery above the Upper Mall to meet Amma Gyan, the curator of the art space.

Amma welcomed us with a guided walk through the Gallery, sharing the space’s purpose and vision and answering our questions. The Gallery showcases work by a range of local artists, including paintings, jewellery, textiles, and more. It was a lovely opportunity to learn about the creative community represented there and to see the variety of work on display.

This Gallery is a space to exhibit, create, and connect with other artists. If you’re interested in showing your work or learning more, please get in touch with Amma directly at [email protected].

After our gallery visit, we continued our tradition of “tea & chat” at Jamaica Blue, opposite M&S. It’s a spacious café that easily could accommodate our group of seven artists. The atmosphere is relaxed, and both the food and prices are very reasonable — a comfortable spot to unwind together after a creative morning.

This is one of several Social Group meet-ups where there has been opportunities to do some ‘PLEIN AIR’ drawing and painting as well as visit some new places. Future meetings are announced to members through the WBAS WhatsApp group and if you would like to be added to this please contact us.

OUR ROLLING EXHIBITION AT BLUE DIAMOND GARDEN CENTRE - CHENIES

Chenies Garden Centre is our flagship exhibition venue. We have been showing and selling our work here for many years now. The paintings are changed frequently; so you will see a variety of styles and mediums there. The café itself is a calm oasis in which to meet with friends for lunch or for excellent coffee and home made cakes.

RONNIE IRELAND - LECTURE - 6th OCTOBER 2026

Every now and again, and in place of a demonstration, we bring you a lecture on an Art related subject. Many of you will recall the excellent talk on "The Glasgow Boys", given by Ronnie Ireland last year. In response to a question from the floor, Ronnie is back to redress the gender balance and will be talking about two female artists; Anne Redpath and Joan Eardly.

Joan Eardley (1921 - 1963) was one of Scotland's most original and admired Scottish Artists, noted for her portraiture of street children in Glasgow and her landscapes of Catterline and other regions of the North East Coast of Scotland. Anne Redpath OBE ARA (1895 - 1965) was a Scottish artist whose vivid domestic still lifes are among her best known works.

Come along for what will without doubt be a brilliantly informative evening. 7.30pm on Tuesday 6th October, at the Tennet Hall of the Watford Grammar School for Girls. Visitors are welcome (£10 at the door).
