A LECTURE ON THE GROUP OF ARTISTS COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS THE GLASGOW BOYS

Ronnie Ireland returns but will be leaving his brushes, paints and graphite sticks at home. Instead, he will be bringing art history to life for us with stories about The Glasgow Boys.

This group of artists emerged, exhibiting their work at the Royal Glasgow Institute, unlike the older established Scottish artists whose paintings were traditionally hung at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. The Boys considered the traditional painters as sentimental and unrealistic and they shared an admiration for naturalism and for painting en plein air. Their most intense period was the decade between 1800-1890 when they were at heir most bold and innovative, freeing subsequent generations of artists to explore colour and to continue being revolutionary.
